The meeting was called to order by our president, Joyce Akins at 10:10 a.m. Attendance was 25+!
Our guest was introduced--Dr. Granato who discussed causes and results about the economy, jobs, unemployment, etc. The unemployment numbers lag behind the real story. He talked about the housing problems in CA, FL, NV, AX in particular and that Houston is in relatively good shape in housing as we did not have the big bubbles some other places had. Some people bought houses at 4 times their annual incomes when the norm is 2.5-3 times. He stated that "too big to fail" is a very dangerous idea. Dr. Granato talked about how academic tenures stop change because they continue with the old ideas. In regard to medical insurance--it is not good that competition cannot pass state lines. We had several Q&A's and not enough time--we want Dr. Granato to come back! The minutes of February were read and approved. The treasurer's report was read and approved. Mike Laster announced his candidacy for City Council District F. There are 300,000 people in this district. His site is www.LasterforDistrictF.com. President's Report--Joyce discussed her desires for increased involvement of precinct chairs in Sharpstown; for speakers we want to do subjects, i.e., panel on healthcare, women and politics, criminal justice issues, environmental; more involvement of the universities; meetings to be a forum for politicians who are running for election; encouraging people to open up homes for signing bees, meet and greets; joint events with other clubs. Joyce wants to increase our connections and supporting of the Democratic Party. She wants to increase our attendance at the Johnson, Rayburn, Richardson dinner; our presence at HCDP events and other clubs; work with candidates; grass roots efforts needed; use meetings for info exchange--gossip/new business from members.
