The Sharpstown Democrat's March meeting will be held at Bayland Community Center, 6400 Bissonnet,  Saturday, March 24 at 10am.

Evelyn L. Merz, our guest speaker, has a wealth of experience in local water and wildlife conservation and environmental issues.

Evelyn co-founded the Sims Bayou Coalition and is active in coordinating the local Sierra Club response to inadequate funding of Texas state parks.  She served as representative to the Harris County Flood Control Task Force and Vegetation Management Committee.  She has worked on projects in conjunction with other agencies including U of H Coastal Center, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Texas Parks & Wildlife and East Texas Plant Materials Center.

In our business section of the meeting we will have Election of the 2007 Officers and Board Members.

Please arrive early to meet our guest, drink coffee and discuss issues.

Our guest in February was candidate for city council pos 3, Melissa Noriega.
All members present agreed to endorse Ms. Noriega.  We hope to help with voter registration and voter turnout campaigns for this special election to be held on May 12.   Please stay tuned for details.

Here are the results of our Mock Elections during the last two meetings.  Notice that Al Gore made a huge comeback winning in February.  However, Hillary still has a larger 2 month total.  Obama rules as VP and total votes.

Dear Democratic Friends,                                                                                          February 24, 2007

The Sharpstown Democrats met this morning.  We enjoyed meeting Melissa Noriega, candidate for city council pos 3.  You can contact her at or 713-Mellisa.

I solicited help in supporting the troops.  My niece’s husband, Lance, shares a "hut" with six other soldiers in Afghanistan. When asked what the soldiers like to receive, my niece listed a few things then said, "The only other thing I can think of is just thank you notes.  It gives them that boost when they just want to be home.  Thank everyone who does this for the troops from our family.  We really appreciate it and so do the troops.  It is a great thing to know that people care about what you are doing for them..."

I wish to send a box of stuff and LETTERS to my nephew to share with his mates.  Please help me by writing a personal hand written (legible) note to a soldier who is serving.  My nephew is a religious conservative, so the note should only show appreciation for their great sacrifice – no politics.  If you are not a creative writer, a very short and sweet thank you will suffice, as quantity of letters is probably a good thing.  Please mail your “Dear Soldier” or “Dear Hero” notes to me at the address below, sign and date.  Perhaps mention a hint of something personal about yourself to make it more real and sign and date it.

Melissa, whose husband Rick, was in the same situation in 2004-2005, wrote a quick but lovely letter for me to send.

Near end of the meeting, we unanimously decided to endorse Melissa Noriega as a club.  I'd like to point out, that it is the club's policy not to financially support candidates, and not to endorse specific candidates.  However, Melissa is the only Democrat in the race and 100% present were in agreement.  She will list us as a supporter on her website www.MelissaNoriega.com.

I hope that we can all follow through by putting our "boots to the ground" and helping with Voter Turn-Out and Voter Registration efforts.  There is planning underway to have tables at Foodtown and Foodarama and perhaps high schools.  I hope that some of you can volunteer time for this.  Please call or email if you are interested in helping.

Our next meeting is Saturday March 24, 10am, Bayland Community Center-- speaker/topic to be announced.   If you are interested in helping with club event planning, please let me know.  Our next executive committee meeting is Wednesday, March 7 -- place to be announced.

Here are the results of our Mock Elections during the last two meetings.  Notice that Al Gore made a huge comeback winning today.  However, Hillary still has a larger 2 month total.  Obama rules as VP and total votes.
